Welcome to the Department of General Services-Maryland Capitol Police
website.
Thank you for your interest in one of the oldest capitol police agencies in
the nation. I am honored to serve as Chief of Police, and am committed to
work with the men and women of the Department, who diligently fulfill their
duties each day serving our citizens in making the Maryland State Capitol,
DGS owned buildings and state employees safer.
The history of the Department of General Services-Maryland Capitol
Police can be traced back to 1862, when an act of legislation made the
Governor responsible for appointing a competent person for upkeep of
buildings and grounds. Two watchmen and a keeper of the steam house
and furnace were assigned this task.
Today the Maryland Capitol Police has expanded in numbers, duties and
responsibilities. Throughout the years, our primary responsibilities have
remained the same. Our main focus still lies in protecting life and
property; preventing, detecting and investigating criminal acts; and
enforcing traffic regulations.
The DGS Maryland Capitol Police is a full service police department that
provides law enforcement and security services for over 40 State
buildings, 10 parking garages, and 16 surface parking lots throughout the
Annapolis and Baltimore areas. These facilities are utilized by state
employees and visited by over one million people per year. The
Department is also responsible for protecting employees and property
surrounding these areas and has jurisdiction within 1000 feet of all
properties. Additionally, we are responsible for protecting Members of the
Maryland General Assembly, providing security to the oldest state house
in America and providing customer service to individuals who visit these
facilities.
The objective of this site is to ensure an ultimate customer service
experience, provide essential information and help navigate through DGS
owned and/or leased facilities secured by the Maryland Capitol Police.
Thank you for visiting the Department of General Services-Maryland
Capitol Police website. I appreciate your interest in our Department and
the support of the men and women who make up the Maryland Capitol
Police.
Respectfully,

Michael S. Wilson
